R.O.S.E. (Rural Organization for Social Elevation) was founded in 1988 by Jeevan Verma after he became interested in social work to help his community. R.O.S.E. runs a public school for poorer families, has built 5 houses, a dozen composting toilets and helps with improving life in the valley in large and small ways. Ongoing funding comes from hosting international visitors. As a guest at R.O.S.E. Kanda your fees go toward these projects and other local jobs.
During your time at R.O.S.E. you will be hosted by the Verma family and stay in their guest lodging and take meals with the family. You can spend your time taking part in various voluntary activities such as; teaching at the school, helping with household or garden chores, taking part in a construction project if one is scheduled, doing computer work to help with outreach or possibly some other project of your own devising.
“The experience I gained here will always remain as one of my most precious possessions.”
-Reiko Yoshida, Japan

Testimonials
My three weeks here were full of learning and joy. Living with an Indian family, I helped with small projects like building a well and preparing meals. Their warmth made me feel at home. Even small efforts made a big difference, and I’ll always cherish the conversations, laughter, and experiences—from daily life to celebrations like a Hindu wedding and Independence Day.
I’ve been volunteering here for a month with two other girls from Borderless World Volunteers. We're working on projects like building a Community Farm Shop and a water harvesting tank, as well as teaching English to local children. It's been an incredible chance to experience Indian culture, from cooking to daily life. The Verma family has been so welcoming, making the experience truly enjoyable.
My four weeks here at Kanda have been wonderful. From day one, I felt warmly welcomed by the Verma family. I helped with the construction of a storage room and taught English to children, who were eager to learn. The relaxed pace allowed me to work and enjoy quiet moments, exploring the beautiful surroundings. The food was delicious, and the hospitality made my stay unforgettable. I’m truly grateful to Mr. Verma and his family for their kindness and generosity.
